ABOUT 60,000 facebook users in Ghana have now become members of the fan page of a leading presidential aspirant of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr Paa Kwesi Ndoum.
The spokesperson of the Youth for Ndoum 2012, Mr Divine Nkrumah, who made this known to the media in Tamale, said a large number of these ‘facebookers’ were youth.
He said this was an indication that many young people had bought into Dr Ndoum’s message and were prepared to vote for the CPP if Dr Ndoum is elected for the second time as the party’s flag-bearer for the 2012 elections.
Mr Nkrumah noted that the fan page was started in April this year, adding that for Dr Ndoum to get about 60,000 members in these few months was a very significant achievement.
“By so doing, he has become the second most popular politician on facebook in Ghana,” he noted.
Mr Nkrumah, who was in Tamale to meet with some of these facebook fans of Dr Ndoum, said the Youth for Ndoum 2012 had embarked on a national tour to interact with all young admirers of Dr Ndoum.
He said a number of these young people had actually expressed interest in volunteering their time and efforts to support Dr Ndoum’s presidential bid.
“Since we came to Tamale, we have met 68 of these volunteers and many of them are students of some tertiary institutions including the Tamale Polytechnic and the University for Development Studies (UDS),” he mentioned.
Mr Nkrumah further pointed out that Dr Ndoum was counting on the prospect of convincing first time voters, particularly the youth, to give their nod to the CPP during the 2012 elections.
He said so far, Dr Ndoum had made the youth very central to his campaign and this is part of efforts to revive the CPP and erase the negative perception that the CPP is for the elderly population.
Although the CPP is yet to slate a date for its congress to elect the party’s flagbearer, Mr Nkrumah said Dr Ndoum was the surest candidate who would emerge as the party’s flag-bearer for 2012.
“All indications point to the fact that Dr Ndoum is the right man for the CPP and would, therefore, be given the nod during congress,” he said.
